As if planning your wedding and booking your vendors wasn’t stressful enough, coordinating the services of multiple vendors can often become a nightmare. It can be overwhelming to schedule the services that feed off of each other, but never fear, I’ve got your back! Below is the guide on when to book your photographer, schedule your engagement session, and hire your invitation designer to keep you organized and stress-free.
Wedding Planning Tips:
Pre-planning will go a long way in ensuring a smooth wedding planning process. Here are some things to consider before you book your vendors.
- What is the vendor’s availability and turn-around time? Make sure you understand their process and get a clear idea of the timeline. Knowing how long the editing process is for your engagement photos is just as important as scheduling the photo shoot. The same applies to your wedding invitations. It is important to know how long the design process will take and how quickly they will be printed.
- What are the needs of your guests? This goes beyond creating the guest list and has a huge impact on your stationery needs. It will also determine when your invitations need to be in the mail. Are you having a destination wedding or will your guests have to travel? If so, they will need more notice than if you were having an in town wedding and you will most likely need to send a save the date. This also means that you will need to book your photographer and schedule your engagement session sooner if you want to include pictures in the design.
- How do you envision using your engagement photos in your invitation design? Would your guests enjoy hanging a photo of your smiling faces on their fridge for the next couple of months? Then show off those adorable engagement photos on your save the dates! Your guests will love to see them! Would you rather send a photo wedding invitation or include a separate photo with a formal announcement? It is important to consider the design of your wedding invitation suite as this will impact the timeline for booking your vendors.

When do I hire my photographer?
I asked Jessica with Salted Orange Studios for her advice on when to hire your photographer. “Ideally, you should contact your photographer as soon as you can to make sure they are available on your wedding day. Once you have that locked down, plan at least 2-4 weeks out to schedule your engagement session. Give yourself enough time to plan for weather and varying schedule conflicts. From there, it is about another 2 weeks to have the photos edited and ready to use on your invitations.”

When do I start the custom invitation design process?
I like to encourage my brides to plan on about 2 months for the custom design process. This includes everything from the consultation where we define your vision to picking your beautiful and one-of-a-kind invitations 🙂 The last piece of the puzzle is knowing when to get those beauties out in the mail!
